Is Metro Line 2A and Line 7 Construction Complete?

Yes, work on both lines is complete, with trains on the full routes since 19 January 2023. The first stretches opened on 2 April 2022. They ran from Dahisar East to Dahanukarwadi on Line 2A and to Aarey on Line 7.

Both lines are elevated and run through the heart of Mumbai's busy western suburbs. Line 2A follows Link Road on the west side, and Line 7 follows the highway to the east. They meet at Dahisar East, where passengers can switch between them.

Line 2A cost about ₹6,410 crore to build and uses the Charkop depot. Together, the two lines form the backbone of MMRDA's metro network in the western suburbs.

How Many People Use Line 2A and Line 7?

Ridership has grown steadily since the lines opened. MMRDA's metro network crossed 30 crore passenger journeys on 3 August 2026.

The latest 5 crore journeys took just 179 days, the fastest pace since operations began. Daily ridership now averages about 2.79 lakh journeys across the network. Lines 2A and 7 carry the bulk of this traffic, along with the newer lines.

That growth shows how many commuters now choose the metro over crowded roads and local trains. It also shows why MMRDA keeps adding new lines that feed into this network.

Line 9: The Northern Extension

Line 9 extends the network north from Dahisar East to Mira-Bhayandar. It is the most important current construction project linked to Lines 2A and 7.

  • Commercial services on the first stretch began on 8 April 2026.
  • This stretch runs from Dahisar East to Kashigaon, with three new stations.
  • The remaining stations are expected to open by December 2026.

Once complete, Line 9 will let Mira-Bhayandar residents ride straight into Borivali, Goregaon and Andheri. It should also ease traffic on the Western Express Highway near the Dahisar check naka.

How Do Line 2A and Line 7 Help Daily Commuters?

For many people in the western suburbs, these lines have changed the ride to work in clear ways.

  • They run above the roads, so traffic jams do not slow them down.
  • Trains are air-conditioned, which makes summer and monsoon trips far more comfortable.
  • They reach offices on Link Road and the highway that sit far from railway stations.
  • They offer a calmer ride than packed local trains at rush hour.

Many commuters now use a mix of local trains and metro lines. For example, they take a train to Goregaon and switch to Line 7 for the last stretch.

What Is Still Left to Build?

While Lines 2A and 7 are done, the wider network still has work in progress. The key pending pieces are the rest of Line 9, all of Line 2B and Line 7A.

Once these are done, a Borivali rider could reach BKC, Chembur and the airport by metro alone. That would make the western suburbs one of the best-linked parts of the city.

Which Borivali Stations Serve Line 2A and Line 7?

Borivali has stations on both lines, one set on each side of the railway.

Line Borivali-Area Stations Side
Line 2A Mandapeshwar, Eksar, Borivali West, Pahadi Eksar Borivali West, along Link Road
Line 7 Rashtriya Udyan, Devipada, Magathane Borivali East, along the highway

Residents of Borivali West usually use Line 2A, while those in Borivali East tend to use Line 7. Both lines meet at Dahisar East, just north of Borivali.

What Do These Lines Mean for Borivali Property?

Metro access tends to lift home prices within walking distance of stations. Borivali East prices rose 7.3% in the past year, based on 99acres data. Line 7 and new projects along the highway helped drive that growth.

Prestige Grove Park, a pre-launch Prestige Group project in Borivali East, sits close to Line 7 stations. Residents will be able to ride to Goregaon's offices and Andheri East without using the roads. As Line 9, Line 2B and eventually Line 7A open, the reach from Borivali will grow even further.
